Essay / Analysis Of Just Mercy By Bryan Stevenson - 1006
Stevenson uses logos effectively to show this. Stevenson tells readers about a man Horace Dunkins. Horace Dunkins was an intellectually disabled man. He was sentenced to death. It was very cruel because this man had been disabled since he was young. He essentially had the spirit of a child. Stevenson stated, "Mr. Dunkins suffered from an intellectual disability and the trial judge concluded that he suffered from 'mental retardation' based on his school records and prior tests" (169). Knowing that he suffered from mental illness, they still decided to put him on death row. The way Horace died was very cruel. “The officials incorrectly connected the electrodes to the chair, so that only a partial electrical charge was delivered…” (170). That's why they continued to electrocute him until he died. It was very cruel because this man did not deserve this at all. But he wasn't the only mentally ill person to receive treatment.
