  • Essay / History of Chemistry: Chemical Weapons - 798

Chemical weapons are deadly, inhumane, dangerous and excessive. They are considered weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and have been on the rise since the early 1900s. These weapons are past and present proof that chemistry can be transformed into technology. And have had a huge impact on society for decades. Chemical weapons appeared at the start of the First World War. These were simple grenades or mortars filled with common chemicals. These specialized grenades were popularized by the Germans and were later used even by Allied forces. They were popularized by their area of effect and useful in trench warfare. There are several types of chemical weapons and they all have different effects on their victims. All effects being extremely painful and horrible. There are blister agents, nerve agents, blood agents and choking agents. All of these agents are chemically and illegally formed. The first being Vesicant, or blister agent. These contained mustard gas or C4H8Cl2S. He left his victims covered in water blisters that were painful beyond belief. These blisters are caused by chemicals that increase the skin's sensitivity to light, causing severe burns. Next come the nerve agents, which are considered organophosphates. Nerve agents work by stopping the flow of ACh, which is responsible for muscle contraction. When performed, it leaves you with no control over your body, leading you to a slow and painful death. Then there are blood agents. Blood agents are fast-acting positions, such as cyanide or arsenic. They act quickly and pass into your bloodstream. In short-term exposures, it may simply cause dizziness and nausea. But in the long term, it can cause brain damage and muscle paralysis. Finally, there are the smothering agents. The age of suffocation... middle of paper ......on its own citizens in early 2013. I believe that chemical weapons will have a negative impact on the future of society. Even though we learned our lesson about how dangerous they are and banned them, I still think they will reappear. And next time, they will be even stronger thanks to technological advances. Maybe we'll see them in the next big war or if governments fall, so will the laws and they can now be used by militias thanks to technology that makes them easier to make. I think huge governments are the only ones to contain them. Chemical weapons are incredibly dangerous and deadly weapons of mass destruction. They can kill hundreds of people in an area in less than a few seconds. All this even though they have no idea. This is proof that progress in chemistry and technology must be controlled and that the whole history of chemistry is not a good story..
