One of the fun things about returning to campus after a break from school is noticing all the changes that have happened. This semester, one of the most obvious changes to the look of campus is the addition of smoke-free zones demarcated by their blue borders. The first question that came to my mind was: why? On paper, this certainly sounds like a really good idea. Installing smoke-free zones in front of building doors would allow the non-smoking population to no longer walk in a cloud of smoke every time they want to go to class. Secondhand smoke is defeated and everyone is happy, right? The fact is that the lines painted on the floor don't really do much to stop smoke from heading towards any door. Just last week, I was entering a building and encountered someone smoking in front of an entrance that had no smoke-free zone. The time it took me to say hello upon entering was long enough for the smell of smoke to waft through the building. As I was walking down the hallway, a particularly annoyed staff member burst into the hallway....
