Essay on the Position of Abortion In recent history, many controversies have arisen on the subject of abortion, with both sides claiming to be morally right. Those who believe that abortion is the murder of an innocent child and should be illegal are considered pro-life. Those considered pro-choice believe that abortion is a safe way for women to choose what they want for their own bodies and a way to not have a child if it is the product of a rape or incest. The Supreme Court ruled in a 1973 case, Roe v. Wade, in which it decided that abortion should be legal. Furthermore, if abortions are banned, it will encourage more women to undergo unsafe abortions, leading to an increase in the number of women's deaths. Abortion allows women to refuse to have a child because of rape or incest, rather than being forced to give birth. Abortion should be a legal procedure in the United States because it is constitutional under U.S. law, is safer than illegal procedures, and provides an outlet for victims of sexual abuse and rape. Various methods of abortion have existed since 1760 BCE; however, many women would no longer need to risk their lives to travel to a “secondary” clinic for a simple procedure. According to an article titled How Much Access to Abortion Should Women Have in the United States?, “Many women, however – often young and single – have become pregnant by accident and, unable to raise a child, had an illegal abortion. Illegal abortions could be dangerous. Some women have died following this procedure; others suffered from medical problems” (Issues and Controversies). Women who want to have an abortion will always find a way to do so. Keeping abortion legal will keep more women safe and result in fewer injuries and injuries.
