The emotional impact can include PTSD, anxiety, depression and lack of empathy; conduct disorders, intimidation, even delinquency. What may be the long-term reactions/impacts of crime? The long-term consequences of child abuse and neglect can be damaging. Victims of child abuse typically present with an ongoing pattern of mental disorders. These can include PTSD, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, unhealthy relationships, lack of empathy, and even promiscuity. Not all victims of abuse become abusers, but most abusers tend to have been abused as children. Who could blame the victim and why? The victim may blame circumstances such as the environment or substances used before the abuse occurred. The victim may also blame other adults who knowingly do not stop the abuse. However, the victim can also blame themselves. The victim may think the abuse is their fault. This is common in all forms of abuse, but children are more naive and can be manipulated much more easily than adults. The abuser may make the child feel like it is the child's fault that the abuse is happening.
