Essay / Child Raising Theory - 1025
Unlike Garrett, Tyrec's parents cannot afford to invest as much in Tyrec as most middle-class parents would. Tyrec is an example of the alternative approach to child rearing defined by Lareau; natural growth. In the natural process of growing up, children have more unstructured time and therefore create their own activities to entertain themselves. This parenting style does not prepare children for highly structured environments, such as school. Tyrec is a perfect example of a naturally growing child raising style. Since his parents don't have much time to spend with him and don't have time to hire help, this causes Tyrec to live his daily life according to his own plans and has the freedom to do what he wants. he wants it when he wants it. Because of this lack of a social schedule, children like Tyrec do not learn the same main rules of society as a middle-class child like Garret. As Lareau's study shows, natural growth families tend to be more individualistic, meaning that an activity that one family member might do will not affect other members. Coming from a naturally growing family raising children, Tyrec will mainly lack cultural capital. Indeed, as I said previously, he will not be used to a structured environment like school, so he will probably have difficulty achieving it, and therefore his education might not reach a high level.
