Essay / Negative Effects of Racial Discrimination - 1693
America is the country where people immigrate to so they can live their dreams. The “American Dream” is something everyone believes they can achieve, but is that really the case? America is one of the most developed and industrialized countries in the world, but we are by no means perfect. America was founded on opportunity, and that is why many African Americans, Middle Easterners, and Hispanics immigrated to this country. However, they were unaware of the discrimination in this country when they moved here. Is it really possible for African Americans and Hispanics to live the “American Dream” if they face discrimination in the workplace and many other places? Even though America does a lot to prevent discrimination, it continues to exist and is as significant as ever. Discrimination is a major problem in the United States, and many factors go hand in hand. Discrimination exists in the workplace, in the community, and in law enforcement. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly why this is, except by simply looking at history. In the past, they were used as slaves, completely at the mercy of their "owner" and not even considered human. History shows how African Americans have always faced discrimination. They didn't even have the rights of a human being until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This document prohibited discrimination based on race, sex, religion, and color. Although this has been in place for some time now and there have been improvements, we can't just fix this problem. Racial discrimination has many negative effects, which affect not only the person being discriminated against, but also their relatives and friends as well. The racial question...... middle of paper ......ng new laws, many people are offended and prejudices are getting worse. It's definitely not something we want either. From my research into prejudice and discrimination, what causes it, and what can be done to solve the problem, I can see that many people don't even realize the scale of the problem. I believe that this problem is actually more serious than people let on, and that if we don't find a way to remove people's individual feelings from their decisions, nothing can really be done about it. I think the best solution is to educate people about discrimination and teach them about other cultures and how they work. Many people discriminate simply because they don't know where these minority groups come from, and I think educating them about this will help them. Discrimination can be reduced in today's world; we just need to educate people about it.
