Since the other Wes's mother had gone to work before he left for school in the morning, she had no way of knowing if he was actually going to the school or not. So instead of going to school, he invited his friends over and they did drugs (Moore 59). If Wes had more supervision after his mother left for work, he wouldn't have been able to get away with skipping school. According to the article The Trouble With Boys, single mothers spend between 1.2 and 1.4 fewer hours per week with their sons than with their daughters. Boys are therefore at a disadvantage because they receive lower levels of parental input than children with both parents present. (Bertrand and Pan 53). Not only does the lack of parental supervision cause adolescents to engage in criminal activities, but being surrounded by crime in neighborhoods also leads to criminal activities. Single mothers who raise their children alone are forced to financially support their children alone, which pushes them to live in a more affordable but poor neighborhood (Alfrey 5). In The Other Wes Moore, both Weses lived in low-income neighborhoods where drugs were sold and other criminal activity.
