Essay / Analysis of the death of the turret gunner by Randall...
“mother” functions as a metaphor representing a mother and her child, a feeling of childish innocence. The image of the "wet fur" is the inside of the aviator's flight jacket. Another image is that of a melancholy, innocent and frightened animal. The aviator leaning in the belly of the plane shows readers how frightened and helpless he was in this narrow sphere six miles up in freezing temperatures. Abortion comments on the waste of war. The imagery of birth and the womb used by Jarrel places this theory of innocence in the reader's mind. Just as a baby is innocent and unaware of the evils occurring, Jarrell's ideas are combined to paint a picture of violence, reinforcing the reader's perception of the horror of violence.
