The boy starts panicking by saying that there are aliens and that they live on Maple Street disguised as humans. He says he's read this kind of story in his comics and it gets into the minds of adults. They start to become paranoid. Nothing gets better once Charlie's character starts going on a witch hunt and starts blaming people on anyone who does something "suspicious". Everyone is responsible for the violence that occurs in the streets. Everyone let their fear and paranoia take over and they accepted what the boy said and even accused random people. The only character who tried to calm the situation and could tell what would happen by leading a witch hunt and going further was Steve. Throughout the story he tries to understand people's fear and show how outrageous they all were. But even he, in the end, fell into fear of the unknown and his paranoia. Serling's opening and closing monologues in "The Monster Are Due on Maple Street" are clear assessments of the situation occurring. In his opening statement, Serling says it's a beautiful summer day. Barbecues, ice cream and children's laughter can be heard. This is Maple Street in its last moment of calm and reflection before the monsters arrive.
