Essay / Physical violence, physiological violence in The Color Purple...
In Alice Walker's book, The Color Purple, she described the life that African-American women had to live daily. The books tell how black men mistreated black women; sexual and physical abuse (Kauffmann). The aim of Color Purple is to acknowledge heartbreak, but telling it in story form; show this by writing a story that can be learned from those who suffer (Fiske). According to Fiske, “The color purple is continually equated with suffering and pain…described as the color of “eggplant” (Fiske). The women suffered physical abuse, mental abuse, and sexual abuse throughout the book. Men were the leaders. and if they didn't do as they were told or respond, there were always consequences. Black men were not the only ones to abuse their partners, but white men also beat black people (Walker). The color purple is made up of all the common experiences and struggles we have faced: oppression, abuse, and violence (Fiske). The main theme of the book is overcoming the two main separations, sexuality (between women) and a bit of pantheism (Mars-Jones). Women didn't really have a say in those days and men only wanted them for sex. Their main goal was to have babies and become a housewife. When Celie's mother left, she took on the role of a mother to care for and protect her sister, but she began to notice that Mr.__ was looking at her sister in a way that she knew would not It wasn't good. Nettie was scared but Celie knew God had everything under control (Williams). According to Tate, “The novel evolves as Celie, a fourteen-year-old black girl, confides in God through letters about what happened to her. She was raped by a man she assumes...... middle of paper ...... women come through, they remain strong and able to work together. The quilt that Célie sews in the book represents the characters, and how they come together to help each other grow and strengthen. Shug is the only person who shows Celie what it's like to be in love. She also helps her find her sexuality and know what she wants. She helps her release all the pain she felt while staying with Mr._ (Williams). It was thanks to Shug that Celie knew her sister was still alive, because she and Shug found the letters that were hidden. (Fiske).Sofia also helped Celie improve by teaching her how to defend herself. Celie admired Sofia because she wanted to be able to defend herself, like Sofia (Hall). Women learned to work with each other to improve themselves, which made their lives better..
