JoAnn Robinson calls the outcome of this civil rights movement a sober victory, because although it was a victory for African Americans, the struggle to achieve these rights equals was long. African Americans were tired of being mistreated and degraded. However, they also knew that equal rights did not mean sudden peace and acceptance. They were aware that the battle was only half won and that the fight would continue until the whites accepted a system of integration. Violence characterized this era, which is a large part of why African Americans reacted to the news of victory the way they did. . There was forced segregation in many places similar to buses. If African Americans disobeyed these social norms, then they would be punished by racist white citizens.
