Some injustices have existed for decades, while others appear to be new problems. One of the social injustice issues that people face today is the many issues surrounding transgender people. Although transgender people have been around for many years, issues related to their rights are relatively new. Now that society is more accepting of, or at least more aware of, the LGBTQ movement, transgender people are being thrust into the spotlight. Say no to plagiarism. Although this issue has been in the spotlight for some time, it remains relevant, especially in rural communities that lack the necessary facilities. In the city where I live we still have problems, not with their rights, but with space. Essentially, transgender students would like to use the bathroom of their gender of choice, not their birth gender. While others would at least like to have gender-neutral bathrooms. Bathroom Policies First and foremost, one of the problems isn't really with the policies themselves, but rather with the wording and use of "sex" instead of "gender." Schools that receive Title for students of the other gender (Watkins & Moreno, 2017, p.166). This decision excludes transgender students because it bases the rule on sex, not gender. What remains are all future court decisions based on a judge's interpretation of his or her own interpretation or the interpretation of the school or agency involved (Phillips 2017). This is where some of the problems lie. Because it mentions sex rather than gender, some states and school districts struggle with having to provide adequate facilities. It also allows community members to challenge these ideas due to the bill's lack of clarity regarding students' gender or chosen gender. Effects on the Community I think this debate over transgender bathrooms has had a positive effect on our community. I think it highlighted some issues that a lot of people didn't see in their lives. It's such a small community that I live in, with only about 9,000 residents. However, we have transgender students, so this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Advocating for social justice As a school worker, I was already advocating for this injustice. I work at a local at-risk school, which resides in one of the community's older school buildings. This building being as old as it is, only has bathrooms for men and women. Even the staff toilets are arranged this way. There is no option for a unisex bathroom. We don't have to worry about changing rooms, at the same time there are no changing rooms. This must be done in the toilet.
