Essay / The Restoration period: revival of the dramatic stage the theatrical stage by the European monarch Charles II in England, Scotland and Ireland. . While the Restoration period is a broad term coined to refer to the revival of English monarchies and the rulers of those regions, Restoration theater, and more specifically a style of comic theater that rose to prominence with explicit content known as known as Restoration Comedy, were important aspects of the Restoration. period until its end in 1710. The history, settings, subject matter and style, principal actors and their innovations, and principal playwrights of Restoration comedy are all important to understanding the Restoration period as a whole. as such due to a restoration of the theater scene in Britain. Under the Puritan regime, between 1642 and 1660, theater was banned due to the Puritan belief that the violence, drama, morbidity, and stupidity of the theater and playhouses led to sin and mischief. Actors were persecuted under penalty of imprisonment, public beatings and flogging, and even death, for their participation in productions; actors fled to other countries like France to escape this type of persecution and be able to continue their business. Charles II also fled to France for his life, but upon his return and reascension to the throne, he overthrew the Puritan regime and reestablished the theater. Charles II's support for the theater did not stop at allowing productions and actors back into the country; it also enabled and encouraged new innovations within the theater community. Among the innovations were the possibility of actresses performing for the first time on stages and theaters, as well as the style and structure of the works produced. . The revival of theater brought changes for actors and actresses, including a redefinition of gender roles, as well as for playwrights who combined the styles of some of the greatest cultures in history to create a new style of fascinating writing. Perhaps the most important contribution of Restoration comedy to the era and to society in general was a new sense of freedom of expression following the censorship of the Puritan regime.
