Essay / Examples of Chaos Crossing to Safety - 1779
Midway through the book, the Garths had to make a difficult decision regarding Fred Vincy's job and their daughter, and they talk about what's best and Both Susan and Caleb agree to give Fred a job and let Mary decide who to marry (349-351). This episode shows how much Susan and Caleb trust each other. Trust is something that comes from open communication with each other, and the Garths show that they trust each other by openly communicating about this situation with Fred. They discuss not only Fred's situation and what to do with him, but also Mary. This further shows the trust they have in each other, as they can talk openly about their children's futures. They do not try to hide secrets from each other and openly discuss their own opinions. For example, Susan says to her husband after discovering that Mary loves Fred, "It's a shame for Mary, I think" (349). Susan is ready to express her displeasure about this to her husband. This is seen in the word “mercy”. Pity is a word that expresses sorrow towards something. So, Susan tells her husband that she is sorry that Mary loves Fred. If the Garths did not trust each other, Susan would not have wanted to express her opinion and regret to her husband, nor would Caleb have been able to explain his idea of helping.
