William James Durant, a prominent American author, historian, and philosopher, published The Story of Philosophy in 1926. He viewed philosophy as a comprehensive study and strived to unify and humanize all historical knowledge, which has become too vast and infinitely categorized into tiny specialties, in order to vitalize it for modern use. Durant was a writer gifted with magnificent prose and also a storyteller who had garnered an incredible readership. His brilliant writing, which, rather than being boring and formal academic jargon, is witty and colorful, even appealing to the senses. Durant's publisher, Max Schuster, remarked that Durant's writings begged "to be read aloud"; it was also noted that Durant's fluid technique resulted in "prose so beautiful that it rivals poetry." Durant's deeply varied studies culminated in a book dealing with the universal history of human philosophy.
