Speech in most television and film contexts most often takes the form of a set of lines of dialogue between characters. The dialogue is not primarily aimed at the viewers, but it may be in some cases. Characters tend to talk to each other as if we are not there to listen to their conversation, but in certain situations, however, a character may reject this convention and break the "fourth wall" and will spend their time speaking directly to the audience. . Spurlock does just that, spending the entire length of the documentary directly addressing the audience when not interviewing other persons of interest. We thus see his way of commenting on the things around him and the things that are said to him. For example, we have several opportunities to see Spurlock alone, where he can eat, order food, or perform some other varied activity, all while speaking to his fake audience of the moment. By doing this throughout the film, Spurlock builds a certain relationship with the audience. This is done so that the audience can emotionally identify with Spurlock, as if they knew him personally. By conducting interviews, health checks, and providing information to the audience, Spurlock shows that he is concerned about the current situation and makes the audience feel like he understands what others are talking about as well as what he- even said. . Thus, Spurlock quickly gains our respect and at the same time establishes his credibility. These aspects help him create a strong position in the positions of an omniscient narrator that the reader can trust.
