Armed police: does it work? In the state of California, local police are armed to some extent with their standard handguns. Between the years 1900 and 2000, more than 14,000 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty. Nearly 50% of these deaths are caused by guns, even though crime is at its lowest level in half a century. Police should be armed because they can reduce crime, deal with more dangerous threats, and save lives. Law enforcement should be armed, because when the police are unarmed, with at least some sort of weaponry, the criminal will likely get what he wants if they have superior firepower. As gun violence has sharply increased in parts of the developed world, police must redefine their role so that it is a more appropriate response to a contemporary problem. Fewer officers could die in the line of duty if they were better protected. Arming the police is a matter of self-defense rather than actively participating in regular shootings.
