Essay / Appeal of F. Scott Fitzgerald - 676
F. Call from Scott FitzgeraldF. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “The scope, depth, and breadth of my writing lies in the laps of the gods” (an interview). Little did he know that “the gods” or his readers would take his fame to a whole new level. Perhaps his modesty about his talent is why he is so highly regarded or perhaps even how he was able to write beautiful stories similar to his own life. F. Scott Fitzgerald's disturbing but extravagant lifestyle influenced his writings and has been attributed to his fame. One of Fitzgerald's greatest achievements that brought him popularity was developing the "Jazz Age" through his writings. He wrote a series of short stories specifically about the Jazz Age, but his most famous book, The Great Gatsby, also covers this period. “Gatsby is the essential document of the Jazz Age – the work most commonly regarded as an accurate reflection of the ultimately irresponsible optimism of the boom years of the Roaring Twenties” (Sickels). Fitzgerald knew how to captivate his audience because he wrote about this extravagant period (Sickels). This is why this book is such a great success because of its ability to capture the Jazz Age. Gatsby has essentially become an archetype of the Jazz Age and is used by some as a way to look back historically on this period (Sickels). The novel managed to captivate so many audiences and still can because of its historical accuracy, its similarity to Fitzgerald's life, and its connections to the Roaring Twenties. During his early years, Fitzgerald wrote The Side of Paradise, a very popular book. This book was said to reflect his post-war life and that of a student at Princeton. "The Side of Paradise recounts the life of Amory Blaine, a prince of Princeton...... middle of paper ... would have been Fitzgerald's best work had he lived to complete it" (Fitzgerald, F . This shows that as his career grew, so did his talent and the appreciation of others. His autobiographical work resonates with many because of its historical accuracy at the time and its ability to captivate the reader. As Fitzgerald is one of the most famous writers of all time, he has captivated many with his continued autobiographical work. This is probably why he was so popular because of his talent in interpreting his real life into outlandish stories. To make those who may or may not relate want to read his books. F. Scott Fitzgerald's disturbing but extravagant lifestyle influenced his writings and has been attributed to his fame. His books continue to captivate readers around the world many years after his death..
