  • Essay / Given an almost crowded office space, everyone's initiative...

    The 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. shift is most important, I often completed tasks that would otherwise have been accomplished by permanent staff, therefore overcrowding would have been equated with a lack of productivity of certain staff members. Even though the department was equipped with fairly standardized equipment: cameras, video cameras, microphones, laptops, desktop computers, etc., some equipment did not work, particularly the computers. As an intern I always wanted to work, but there was a setback, the office only had 2 active/working desktops so we had to alternate times between tasks. There was also a working main telephone line and an alternation had to take place between calls, thus slowing the pace at which work would eventually get done. I placed a high value, standard and value on every work experience I gained. over the years, they have all contributed to my overall development and professionalism. Although I spent just over a month at CCN, my time there was invaluable and crucial in shaping my perspective as an investigative journalist. This helped me think critically about how to approach sources and contributed to my speaking, writing and communication skills. My activities in the field of communication actually began at Carimac, Uwi Mona, and I learned the basics of writing for print, television and radio. Although all three aspects of journalism are essential, they employ diverse writing styles and approaches. At CCN, I was exposed to some extent to the corporate communications writing style, which also incorporated public relations to a lesser extent. Even though they have been trained to communicate using the department's communication model and style, they serve a dual role quite effectively. The CCN taught me good practices in the field: how to hold the camera, how to aim it, how to size the different shots and how to become the messenger of the story without getting to the heart of the matter. Staff and intern complete each task correctly, initially writing only factual details.
