First of all, “36% of respondents cited social media as the “biggest waste of time,” ahead of fantasy sports (25%), watching TV television (23 percent) and shopping (9 percent)” (ProCon). Above all, studies show that after consulting your social networks, it takes at least two hours to regain your full attention on your task. Social media lures people in with a single notification, then leads to checking and chatting with other people, leading the incentivized person into procrastination. This waste of time causes people, mainly children, to procrastinate in school and causes them to get poor grades in class. “Students who use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while non-social media users have an average of 3.81, and students who used social media while studying scored 20 % lower than their tests” (ProCon). Parents and teachers say social media is the downfall of our generations. Students had a higher GPA in elementary and middle school than in high school and college because social media was introduced into their lives. Social media not only impacts students' grades, but also their lives. Cyberbullying is at an all-time high and many students are influenced by what others say about them on social media. “49.5% of students reported being victims of cyberbullying and 33.7% actually engaged in online bullying behavior” (ProCon). Social media is one of the many reasons people don't persevere and succeed.
