Essay / Teaching Strategies Used to Promote Active Learning
Active LearningAccording to the book Promoting Active Learning by Chet Meyers and Thomas Jones and referenced by Kathleen McKinney, active learning means "(1) that learning is through nature an active effort and (2) that different people learn in different ways." The first segment of the definition "by nature an active effort" is important because it allows the student to develop critical thinking skills as well as to practice their writing techniques The student can discuss course content in a less formal setting, which can be beneficial in creating more open discussions for the student. As a teacher, it is essential to promote different styles. learning because one student learns differently from another It is an important life lesson for a student to understand that they will not always have the first choice on how to accomplish a task, that they s. It's a job, a game or a job. a sport, etc. Suppose one is at work preparing company brochures and suddenly a boss comes up to the worker. He explains to the worker that using thicker and wider paper for these brochures will increase profitability. The worker may be upset for a while because he is not used to this new construction technique, but in the long run he will be happy because he has learned to design brochures in a different way. Just like that worker who doesn't want to change the type of paper, a student may not want to change or improve the way they learn. The worker, like the student, does not see a new method of construction (or learning) that would be beneficial to him. A worker could have fun creating brochures with thicker, wider paper that would reflect the different learning styles of students. Only through learning styles and the two parts of Meyers and Jones' definition of active learning can we understand that active... middle of a sheet of paper . ..... they learn to listen, write and produce creative ways to accomplish tasks. which are also important. Through debate and discussion, students learn to become better public speakers and improve their communication skills. Summarizing another student's response is a great way for students to realize that active learning is a cooperative process. To me, active learning involves an activity that promotes one of these ideas, because these ideas help the learner discover these essential features of learning.
