  • Essay / Totalitarianism in Animal Farm - 1637

George Orwell's Animal Farm is a satire of the Russian Revolution that took place in the late 1930s. Orwell uses vibrant characters such as Snowball, Old Major and Napoleon to represent part of Russia's horrible past. While Old Major represents the idea of revolution and Snowball represents the idea of industrialism, Napoleon represents the totalitarian dictatorship in Russia. Animal Farm is a good example of what happened to Russia at that time. Although Animal Farm can represent any dictatorship, it more specifically represents the totalitarianism brought about by Joseph Stalin through communism. When someone lives in a totalitarian dictatorship, they have absolutely no freedom. Totalitarianism is a form of government in which the national government exercises total control over all aspects of private and political life (Landestoy). When Stalin came to power in the 1930s, he took control of every aspect of Russia. When living under these dictators, civilians could not express what they thought, had no freedom, and had to live under the dictator's decisions. The dictator would set all the rules and punishments for anyone who broke the rules. If anyone disobeyed Stalin, that person would be sentenced to death. Totalitarian dictatorship was therefore evident throughout Russian history and in Animal Farm. In both cases, these dictators did not care about the well-being of their civilians, they only cared about themselves. Looking at Russian history, we can compare certain political figures very closely to the characters from Animal Farm. In the book Old Major represents Karl Marx. Karl Marx's revolutionary ideals are the same as Old Major's views on revolution...... middle of paper ......ikipedia.org/wiki/TrotskyKreis, Steven. “The Age of Totalitarianism: Stalin and Hitler.” File last edited August 4, 2009.
