  • Essay / E-cigarettes should not be regulated by our...

The use of e-cigarettes, or “vaping,” is slowly becoming a problem for our government. Vaping is starting to take over the tobacco industry, so the government feels the need to step in and regulate it in some way. Electronic cigarettes, or “vapes,” should not be regulated by our government. The juice contained in these electronic cigarettes is composed of vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and pure nicotine. More propylene glycol in the juice gives more flavor, and more vegetable glycerin gives more vapor production. Vapes should not be regulated because they are a thousand times safer than traditional cigarettes, they don't emit "second-hand smoke" and they help people reduce the amount of cigarettes they smoke. However, nicotine is a medication and can increase blood pressure and heart rate in humans when used in excessive amounts. “In 2000, a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik invented the modern electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette” (Hemphill). The Food and Drug Administration wants to subject electronic cigarettes to the same regulations as traditional cigarettes. “In 2009, the Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis of the United States Food and Drug Administration tested 19 varieties of e-cigarettes manufactured by two suppliers, NJOY and Smoking Everywhere. Scientists found that tobacco-specific nitrosamines, known carcinogenic chemicals, were detected in all cartridges of one brand and in two cartridges of the other” (Hemphill). “Critics of the FDA study responded that the harmful chemicals detected were measured by the researchers at levels that were about one millionth of the concentrations considered relevant to human health. Moreover, according to the results of a 2010 study by Bost researchers... middle of article...... Prue Talbot of the University of California, Riverside, discovered another type of nanoparticle in e-cigarette vapor: Analysis revealed a high concentration of heavy metals and silicates. It turned out that these metal nanoparticles came from the heating element, which was made of nickel-chromium wire coated with silver and soldered to tin. Upon exposure to the heating element, the e-liquid seemed to pick up pieces of metal, which were then carried into the aerosol” (Arnold). Electronic cigarettes, or “vapes,” are not one hundred percent safe, but they are. A thousand times safer than traditional cigarettes, they emit no unpleasant smoke (Hemphill). In fact, no smoke is emitted from them, it's just steam. E-cigarettes may ultimately help people quit smoking traditional cigarettes and should not be regulated by our government..
