Essay / Morality of Glas - 1142
Gregorius presents himself as an important character in the city. Reverend Gregorius symbolizes an authority of the Church. Sonderberg opens the book with Dr. Glas describing his hatred for Reverend Gregorius. “By pressing a button in the wall I could kill the pastor, I think I should do it” (15). Throughout the book, Glas expresses his sincere hatred towards Reverend Gregorius. Reverend Gregorius's hatred symbolizes Glas's contempt for the Church, more particularly for religion. When Glas kills Reverend Gregorius, Glas removes his connection to religion. Glas went through three cycles: first, being a follower of religious ethics, second, rebelling against the "duty of God", and third, removing religion from his scope.
