  • Essay / Story of a rich, incompassionate man and...

1In 1881, Mystic Springs patriarch Dr. Addeneye Cooke influenced the railroad to bring a line to the area. He would build his Grand Hotel on top of a mountain using local limestone, the cornerstone of his new city. Soon after, cattle barons, robbery magnates, and bankers purchased most of the land. They financed various cultural facilities such as an opera house, a museum of fine arts and a theater. The great Andrew Carnegie himself had the library built. They paved the streets with cobblestones and installed sidewalks. The socialites had built themselves a little metropolitan getaway in the middle of nowhere. Cooke's Grand Hotel was due to open within a month, with the various craftsmen racing to complete the sumptuous Victorian-style details of its interior. To speed things up, several workers lived in unfinished rooms during construction. One of them was a burly upholsterer named James Kelly who had an English accent and a bushy brown handlebar mustache. Kelly had set up a temporary store in the basement. He had already covered over two hundred and fifty dining room chairs in purple-dyed leather and secured with ornate brass tacks. He now worked on the hotel's crushed velvet sofas and hunting lounges. It was a beautiful morning around 10 o'clock when James Kelly stopped working to take a short break, as was his habit. To regain his strength until lunch, he took a small silver snuff box from his pocket and snorted a pinch or two of cocaine before quietly drinking a pint of strong, cold cider. Enjoying a breath of fresh air through the open door, he took off his derby hat. A receding line of curly brown hair stuck to his forehead from sweat. He looked through the middle of the paper......help, as he stood up and reached out to the dog. James held the dog in his strong arms, scratching it under his chin. Queuing up at the doctor's office, he began handing the puppy over as his graying hand tightened its grip around the dog's throat. “It would be heartbreaking to see this poor puppy in pain, absolutely tragic,” Kelly said, as the dog began retching and kicking at her. Kelly's choke legs. When Dr. Cook grabbed the dog, James loosened his grip so the Scottie could breathe freely again. The two men looked at each other blankly for about 30 seconds or more until Addeneye said, "I'm having someone over for dinner tonight, would you like to join me." » “I would be delighted to join you, sir. » “Excellent then, come to the penthouse at seven o'clock for an aperitif." "Yes sir, it's seven o'clock, thank you sir." "Hello Mr. Kelly" "Hello Dr. Cook
