    Nursing shortages and nursing turnover: effective approaches to leadership and managementNursing shortages and nursing turnover are a problem growing within the nursing profession. The main reason for this growing problem appears to be nurses' dissatisfaction with certain aspects of their work. Nursing leaders and managers play a critical role in job satisfaction and, ultimately, nurse retention. Through this article, I will identify the roles of nursing leaders and managers and examine the different approaches each takes to ensure job satisfaction among their staff and colleagues, as well as how they manage nursing shortages and nursing turnover. In today's rapidly changing health care sector, it is important to develop strong, creative and effective nursing leaders. Leaders are those who possess certain characteristics such as motivation, commitment, autonomy, integrity, courage, initiative, and the ability to manage stress (Huber, 2010). Good nurse leaders have the ability to encourage and inspire those around them to work as a team to achieve a common goal. Effective nursing leaders are respected and admired by their colleagues. They are able to think critically, set goals and have good communication skills that make those around them want to follow their example. “Nursing leaders do much more than just delegate, dictate and direct.
