Essay / Response to Intervention - 1461
RTI, is an acronym that became commonly used in education after the implementation of No Child Left Behind, but what does this acronym mean? Brown-Chidsey and Steege quoted Dave Tilly, a school psychologist, as saying that RTI actually stands for “really great instruction!” » RTI is defined differently in different states. Some will say it means a response to an intervention, while others will say it means a response to an instruction. Brown-Chidsey and Steege argue that it doesn't matter whether you're talking about intervention or instruction; it is important that teachers use science teaching that is responsive to student learning. The RTI has several advantages. First, according to the Nebraska RTI website, research indicates that struggling readers are at higher risk of academic failure and dropping out of school. With RTI, readers who are at risk for reading difficulties can be identified early and, when intervention is provided, they can catch up with their classmates. Second, teachers no longer have to wait for students to fail before they can begin interventions. RTI provides a consistent model and procedures for making data-driven, team-based instructional decisions for all students. From the start of the general education classroom, the first indication that a student is not performing at grade level in an academic area, a research-based intervention is provided. Along with progress monitoring data and based on IDEA 2004, RTI data can be used as part of the overall assessment of special education eligibility. Third, RTI can be implemented district-wise. The district can determine appropriate assessments, programs, and interventions that meet its needs, as long as they follow the model.
