  • Essay / Interview conducted with a disabled person

This interview was conducted with Ms. Isola Cumberbatch, Ms. Cumberbatch is 83 years old. She was a very dynamic person, she cooked her own food, did her shopping and walked to church every Sunday. Ms Cumberbatch, a diabetic, lost her left leg to gangrene. “Gangrene is a disease that occurs when body tissues die. It is caused by a loss of blood supply due to underlying illness, injury and/or infection. (webmd.com) Cumberbatch said she had been diabetic for about 30 years and was careful to follow a strict diet. She further explained that she started feeling some pain in her hallux (big toe) and at first she didn't pay attention. As the pain gradually got worse, she decided to see a doctor. The doctor, she said at the time, gave her medicine, but the pain did not subside. She then went back to the doctor, the doctor recommended that she undergo tests to find out. if there was an underlying cause for the pain in the hallux. The test results indicated that she had a condition called peripheral arterial disease (PAD), so no blood was reaching her hallux. “Peripheral artery disease (also called peripheral artery disease) is a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs.” (mayoclinic.org)The decision was made immediately to amputate the toe, she explained that it was an easy decision to make. This was because she believed the Lord knew best. However, as she recovered after the first operation, Ms Cumberbatch was dealt another blow, she would now have to amputate the leg as the blockage was further up the leg. Again, she reiterated that she was comfortable doing the... middle of paper ... an ear and a half ago I fractured my ankle and had to use crutches to move around. I was very depressed and often didn't do it. I want to leave my bed. In order to successfully cope with a disability, a person must accept how the disability will affect their life and the adjustments necessary to live a meaningful life. Mrs. Cumberbatch's disability was acquired and she first adapted mentally, not that it was easy, but she had faith in God. Additionally, a strong support network gives the person the desire to continue living.Works Cited(nd).
