In most situations, oil spills are caused by people's mistakes or negligence in the face of natural disasters such as hurricanes. Oil floats on waters such as the ocean, rivers and lakes and spreads quickly over large bodies on the surface in the form of a thin layer called an oil slick. As it continues to spread it thins, eventually becoming shiny, which looks like a rainbow sitting on water, this can also be seen on roads and vehicles. This can be very dangerous for animals living in the environment, as well as humans, because it contaminates food. Some species that oil spills can be very harmful to are seabirds, mammals and can also harm fish and shellfish. You may have seen photos of oiled birds and sea otters affected by oil spills, covered in thick coats. Oil destroys the ability of fur-bearing mammals, such as sea otters, and the water-repellent ability of a bird's feathers; this can have fatal consequences. Many birds and animals also ingest oil when trying to clean themselves or when drinking water, which can poison them.
