  • Essay / The Galapagos Islands - 1854

The Galapagos Islands: A Hotspot of Precious Biodiversity Gordon B. Hinckley once said, “Life is precious. Life is sacred. And this must be observed. Hinckley expresses that every variety of life is exquisite and irreplaceable and is there for us to observe and use to improve the overall quality of life. About six hundred miles off the coast of Ecuador lies a biodiversity hotspot called the Galapagos Islands. This archipelago of volcanic islands, formed more than four million years ago, is known for its tremendous multitude of native species found nowhere else on the planet. This creates the ideal place to observe and study the ecological processes of nature, which Charles Darwin took advantage of to study evolution. Unfortunately, the abundance of different species on the islands is decreasing significantly due to numerous intrusive influences. The Ecuadorian government, along with several conservation organizations, are working together to sustain the lives of these animals and prevent extinction. Preservation of the Galapagos Islands, including protection from invasive species, climate change and overexploitation, is necessary to conserve the biodiversity of the unique and rare wildlife native to the Galapagos Islands. The vast biodiversity of the archipelago is under threat and it is essential that the preservation of the islands is enforced. Biodiversity is important in any environment because it drives productivity within an ecosystem where each species has a certain role, or niche, that it must play to maintain the success of its habitat. A more diverse population will result in soil formation and protection, nutrient storage and recycling, climate stability and efficient paper management......rams such as the Galapagos National Park Service, the Charles Darwin Foundation, the Galapagos Conservancy Program and the many projects and rules they promote to preserve the vast biodiversity of the archipelago. Just as Gordon B. Hinckley once said, something as precious and sacred as life is to be worshiped and glorified. Works Cited Barter, James. The Galapagos Islands. San Diego, CA: Lucent, 2002.
