Station Fire“How is it that a single match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to start a campfire? » The Station fire broke out on Wednesday August 26, 2009 at approx. 3:30 p.m. in the Los Angeles River Ranger District/Angeles National Forest, burning more than 250 square miles equivalent to 160,577 acres. This fire claimed the lives of 2 Los Angeles County firefighters. Although the station fire was controlled using unified command and experienced personnel, were the number of resources assigned, level of officer training, and response time adequate for a such a large and devastating forest fire? On Wednesday August 29, the station was destroyed. The fire was first reported around 3:20 p.m. by a foot report at the Angeles Crest Ranger Station, shortly after the Los Angeles County Fire Department received a 911 report at 3:22 p.m. of a fire of brush off the Angeles Crest Highway near mile marker 29. ANF equipment was "Tri Zone and Running" at 3:31 p.m. By 3:36 p.m. the fire was expanding and was reported in 10 areas of heavy brush with a rapid rate of spread. The next conditions report provided by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, BC6, listed 25 to 30 areas with minimal active flame. Unified command was established on August 27 at 1:40 p.m. The station fire continued to expand over the next three days, heading northeast. This fire was fueled by fuel topography and weather conditions, creating a rapid spread of fire with numerous spots. On August 29, the fire was approaching Los Angeles County CDC Camp 16 toward Mount Gleason Road, approximately eight miles from Camp 16.
