  • Essay / Michigan School of Professional Psychology - 1541

My interest in the field of psychology began during my sophomore year of high school when I began working as a peer educator for the Saving Adolescents (SAVE) program through education). This position taught me how to educate inner-city Detroit youth about sexual responsibility while advocating for community participation in the program. This experience gave me the opportunity to build relationships with local teenagers and their parents. It was a great experience and made me realize how much I loved helping others; at that point, I decided to pursue a career in the field of psychology. I remember writing a paper during my senior year that focused on how clients responded to the difference between the therapeutic techniques of African American and Caucasian psychologists. During my research, I found that there was no major difference in the techniques used in sessions, but that clients responded better to therapy when their psychologist shared a similar cultural background. This discovery, combined with the limited number of minority psychologists, convinced me that a career in psychology would be perfect for me. My final wave of inspiration came in the summer of 2006 when I became an office aide at an adult foster home in Highland Park, Michigan. While I was employed there, my supervisor strongly encouraged me to attend a self-help seminar, while there I met another employee who was there to improve her relationship with her 23 year old girl. She said her daughter was a responsible and hardworking woman who worked very hard in the family business. However, she didn't understand why her daughter spent all her time with her friends. I explained to her that it was completely normal for her daughter to spend ...... middle of paper ...... Intended to help establish her spiritual, financial and social independence through educational programs. There will also be assistance for children. After achieving these goals, I plan to enroll in a culinary arts program in my free time. Once my mentioned goals are achieved and my organization implemented, I am confident that I will be well equipped with the knowledge and experience needed to successfully open a multicultural restaurant. Although these goals may seem insurmountable to some, I am confident that my drive and determination will be my fuel throughout my planned journey. The Michigan School of Professional Psychology is a historically strong institute that understands the importance of approaching each individual as a human being rather than a statistic. These are the reasons why the Michigan School of Psychology is my dream school..
