Essay / Reflecting on Social Class - 1118
People from lower classes do not conform when it comes to purchasing products. Part of the problem is that they can't afford healthy foods. Since food stamps (free government money for low-wage people) simply help buy little food, most of the time people have to choose between paying their utilities and buying healthy, healthy foods. expensive. Another problem is that these people do not understand overt consumerism, how healthy it is or whether food impacts the environment or health. When they don't understand overt consumerism, they don't ask for clarification because they have no choice in asking. “Consumerism manifests itself economically through the chronic purchase of new goods and services, with little attention to their true need, their durability, the origin of the product or the environmental consequences of manufacturing and disposal” (Verdant ). Upper middle class people are the opposite of the lower classes. They are not threatened by overt consumerism. They are completely blind to the environmental consequences of manufacturing and disposal when purchasing food. This is a behavior that is taught to upper working class children when they are young. This is highlighted in Invisible Inequality in the discussion between middle-class parents and children. When they tell their children that they pay attention to the environmental consequences when they buy, parents do not pay attention. This will make their children speechless and shy to raise their voice on environmental pollution when they are.
