  • Essay / The Cuban Missile Crisis - 938

The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted 13 days during the Cold War, between the United States, Cuba and the Soviet Union, which caused great unrest around the world . The causes of the crisis date back to the late 1950s, when tensions between the two nations and the United States began to really begin. On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro won the revolution and defeated General Fulgencro Batista and in February 1959, Castro became president and took full control of Cuba. After becoming president, Castro also began heavily taxing American goods, leading Eisenhower to impose trade restrictions against Cuba. Cuba also established itself as openly communist and began establishing diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. This did not sit well with the United States, which therefore decided to end the foreign aid program with Cuba. Cuba is becoming acutely aware of its dependence on American products. On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated and became the 35th president of the United States. After only a few days as president, Kennedy was informed of Eisenhower's secret plan for the CIA to train Cuban exiles in preparation for the invasion and overthrow of Castro. Kennedy was skeptical of the plan but approved it anyway. On April 18, 1961, an attempted invasion took place in the southern part of Cuba and, as Kennedy expected, the invasion failed horribly. The CIA underestimated the number of troops and the extent of weaponry in Cuba. Kennedy accepted responsibility for the loss, still disappointed in declaring that the United States "looked like a fool to our friends, a rascal to our enemies, and an incompetent to everyone else." As a result, the United States paid an incredible ransom of 53 million for the release of survivors captured in exile... middle of paper ...... on the coast of Cuba. Later that day, President Kennedy received a letter from Khrushchev stating that the American quarantine had caused "a serious threat to the peace and security of the people." Following this letter, President Kennedy removed the quarantine line. On October 25, President Kennedy sent a letter to Prime Minister Khrushchev in response to his letter sent on October 24. Kennedy's letter states in the letter that he does not understand why Khrushchev I don't see where he is coming from because, from what Kennedy learned, no nuclear weapons were placed in Cuba. President Kennedy essentially saw the Soviet Union as the main cause of the crisis. At the next Ex-Comm meeting, officials will discuss whether they will remove the missile from Türkiye. They come to the conclusion that the United States will only move the missiles if Cuba withdraws its Soviet missiles..
