Essay / Comparing Humans to Dolphins - 806
The question of whether a dolphin should be a person and should be granted rights like humans seems to be a very strange question. However, if we look closely at the characteristics present in humans that allow them to be people, the same criteria applied to dolphins also makes them people. The first criterion in my definition of a person is that they have meaning. of oneself. This is true for us because we are aware that we exist and we can recognize ourselves as we are. Additionally, this is also true for dolphins, and this is proven because dolphins can recognize each other. In an experiment carried out on dolphins, black marks were placed on the dolphins, which they could not see. The dolphins looked in a mirror and knew they were looking at themselves and not another dolphin. This shows that they are aware and know that they exist. In this case, the dolphins were self-aware and wanted to know what was placed on their bodies, and they could recognize themselves in a mirror as who they are, not as another dolphin. They knew the animal in the mirror was them, not another dolphin. This shows that they are aware of what is happening around them and that they know that they exist. Dolphins have a sense of identity, which is why dolphins should be considered people. Then, in my definition of a person, you must recognize other people and treat them appropriately. As humans, we do this, treating other humans with the respect and rights they deserve. This criterion can also be applied to dolphins and is manifested through many different stories of dolphins saving humans. In one case, dolphins surrounded twelve divers in the Red Sea for the duration of their disappearance. This act has put off many...... middle of paper ...... should we grant them a new set of rights, which will only apply to them? These questions have no definitive answers. They have answers, but from different perspectives, subject to change, and it's important to know that there is no right answer. When we look to the future, giving dolphins a person's identity will change the future for the better. The dolphins will be protected, preventing them from being held in captivity and then forced to train. This will change the idea of zoos and whether some animals have enough intelligence to be released. This will call into question what animals are people and, furthermore, whether they should be released and set free, with rights of their own. It will change everything from our idea of freedom, captivity and rights. In one short sentence, it will challenge the idea of what a person is..
