Global Conflict TrendsThe three main stimuli behind modern global conflicts include: territory, resources, politics, ideology, culture and religion. The majority of conflicts, modern and historical, are a combination of two or more of these problems which are usually compounded by other problems arising from issues related to demographics, resource depletion, technology, misunderstandings, to communication problems, nationalism and even climate change. A recent UNEP report examined conflict statistics and found that natural resources played a role in at least 40% of all intrastate conflicts. The most likely reason ETIM is not listed as a foreign terrorist organization is: "China does not always distinguish between legitimate political dissent and calling for violence to overthrow." the government, and it used the fight against terrorism as a pretext to repress the Uyghurs. The Chinese government characterizes the discontent of the Uyghurs, their peaceful political activism and certain forms of religious observance as terrorist activities” (China).).
