My first choice of French painter, Jacques-Louis David's work is Napoleon Crossing the Alps. As important as the Church of the Savior of Blood was and still is important to Russia, Jacques-Louis David was important to revolutionary France. He lived through a very turbulent period in French history. He was a strong supporter of the French Revolution and the idea of overthrowing the monarchy. As a French revolution moved closer to reality, David turned away from a typical classical subject for which he had been trained and turned his brushes and imagination towards depicting the political events surrounding him and the France. One of the most iconic historical paintings has become Napoleon Crossing the Alps. The work is neoclassical, as it refers to the equestrian portrait of Antiquity and is modeled on a classical ideal.
