  • Essay / Analysis of the movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The movie I chose to watch is “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. In class, we learned that primates belong to different categories. Categories include: movement, reproduction, intelligence and behaviors. In the film, the main ape, Caesar, as well as the other primates in the film show examples of these categories. Although, like most modern films, some behaviors and characteristics are not true and do not relate to the material we studied in class. This film was made in 2011 starring James Franco as the main character, Dr. Will Rodman. The film takes place in San Francisco, where Will works in a laboratory hoping to discover a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Will's main thought every day is trying to save his father. Charles, Will's father, suffers greatly from this disease and even the hired nurses have all given up on his recovery. Charles and his team developed ALZ-112, a vaccine that they hoped would be the scientific breakthrough they were hoping for. The monkey he tested ALZ-112 on showed rapid results of increased intelligence levels. Along with the increase in intelligence level, the monkey's eye color changed from dark brown to bright green, giving it the nickname "Bright Eyes". As Will showed his boss videos of Bright Eyes performing tasks with remarkable results, his boss was very impressed. During the presentation, Will's colleague Franklin attempted to remove Bright Eyes from his cage. Bright Eyes wasn't happy that they took her out of her cage, she ran around the lab, destroying everything in her path. The boss ordered Franklin to kill the monkey, thinking his behavior was a side effect of ALZ-112. They didn’t know that Bright Eyes was only in the middle of the paper… you see, like monkeys do.” At the end of the film, we see Caesar riding a horse. This is a part of the film that I found quite comical. In the movie, we never saw any horses, so for Caesar to know how to get on a horse and ride it is too far-fetched. Also in the film, Caesar was able to speak during the last scene. This is not true, primates like Caesar are capable of learning sign language and other ways of communicating but they are not capable of speaking. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was a very good movie to watch, I would recommend this movie to other students taking this course. The film depicts primates the way we learned about them in class, even though some of their behaviors and characteristics weren't always true to what we learned. The film did a good job of showing the categories that primates possess, even if some of their behaviors were exaggerated..
