  • Essay / Psychology Orientation Course Review

    Taking the Psychology Orientation Course, my first semester at Seton Hall University was probably the most beneficial part of my college experience thus far. Although I entered college confidently declaring myself a psychology major, I didn't really know what that meant or entailed until I took this course. This course taught me valuable information about myself, the field of psychology, and how I can model these two things together. Everything I learned this semester in psychology majors has helped me develop a coherent and positive understanding of who I am and how that identity fits into the world of psychology. The very first and most fundamental thing I learned this semester was how to review my study skills. Through the self-assessments given, I was able to gain a more complete understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as a student. I discovered that I excelled at time management. I'm not one to procrastinate and I'm a very efficient planner. Another personal strength when it comes to my study skills is my ability to take notes. I have a very effective foundation in note-taking and this has continued throughout my undergraduate career. Although I am confident in my abilities as a student and feel that I have strong study skills, there is always room for improvement. I learned this semester that I can improve my skills in a variety of ways. The first and simple step for a better study experience would be to create a defined study space. I could study more sophisticatedly if I spent my time at a clean, well-lit desk rather than in bed or on the floor. As a more complicated improvement, I could use some practice and/or professional training to learn to differentiate between what is crucial... middle of paper ......ase. Psychologists may work in courts, laboratories, government, or educational institutions. These are other career options that I should explore during my college career to make sure I find the most enjoyable career for my future. With my future career in mind, it is essential that I obtain the appropriate degree. This course gave me a basic understanding of the degree I need to obtain to achieve my professional goals. This course did not delve deeply into a single aspect of the field of psychology, however, the general teaching style proved mostly helpful for me. Without this course, I would be floundering through my psychology studies without much guidance. I am grateful to have taken such a valuable course during the first semester of my freshman year and will carry its lessons with me throughout my remaining time in college and my career thereafter..
