One of them is the Tom Robinson trial. He was a white man defending a black man and even though there was controversy, he remained calm. The people of Maycomb talked about him and every day he lost more and more the respect of his companions. Despite all this, he knew what he had to do and didn't bother making a big deal about it. He was calm and well-mannered, which kept him in a decent place in town. For example, when Mayella testifies at the trial, Atticus calls her ma'am and she gets offended. She said: “He hasn't stopped calling me ma'am and Miss Mayella for a long time. I need not accept his audacity, I am not called to accept it” (243). When this happened, Atticus didn't get angry; he remained at peace and continued his investigation into Mayella's side of the story. Early on, Atticus had plenty of opportunities to lose control, but doing so would have ruined his slim chances of winning the case for Tom Robinson.
