  • Essay / Messing with Libyan Sovereignty - 1671

No news has invaded the media as much as the Libyan revolution, and that says a lot given the chaos in many countries and the natural disasters in Japan. What started as a simple “protest against poor housing conditions” turned into a civil war. The conflict pits longtime leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and his loyalists against opposition forces who, until coalition forces approved the intervention on March 17, were solely Libyan. The intervention came following serious disagreements between nations and people within each nation. France was the first to recognize the opposition “National Transitional Council” as the “legitimate government of Libya”. What followed was a series of meetings and debates, escalating into a NATO-enforced no-fly zone and, later, a no-road zone. As clashes continue as this article is written, it is important to understand both sides of the debate: those in favor of intervention and those who oppose it. From the UN's "duty" to protect and the growing vision of oil interests, there is still much to learn about the Libyan question. First, and probably most important, there is the whole dilemma of the West's "right", "duty". “responsibility” – or whatever we call it these days – to protect the innocent civilians of a given country. This is, after all, the purpose of the UN. However, with so many failures throughout history and so many permitted disasters – which will be mentioned and discussed throughout the document – one might wonder where exactly the priorities of the West, protector of democracy. In a very controversial subject - regarding the intervention in Libya - those who use the pretext of "protection" mentioned above are trying to characterize Libya as...... middle of paper......dafi ', says Libya.
