Essay / Four Themes in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
The Kite Runner is the debut novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini, published in 2003 by Riverhead Books. It takes place before the Afghan revolution and its invasion by Russian forces. The Kite is a vivid and captivating story that gives a sense of how long Afghans have struggled to triumph over the forces of violence, forces that still threaten them today. In this novel four themes were introduced, firstly, redemption is a way to make up for committed sins, secondly, adversities contribute to a person's personality, thirdly, fear can lead to serious mistakes and consequences long term, penultimate, after pain. and struggles come from survival and finally, friendship is the essence of a bond that seeks the best from each other. Redemption is a way of making amends for sins. Amir played an evil character on the one hand by not treating Hassan the way he deserved, even though Hassan took responsibilities for him and always wanted to see him happy; Despite this, Amir has always seemed ungrateful and repeatedly reveals a lack of reciprocity. “What would you do if I hit you with this “hit me back” (hosseini 92). This is one of the examples that showed Amir's contempt towards Hassan throughout his childhood. Regardless of all his bad deeds, he raised his head and suddenly decided to change from a sinful person to a person who cares and sees the good in those around him (Hassan, Sohrab). Amir needed to redeem himself, he needed to show his admirable image and his true personality, after all he really owed his life to Hassan. Rahim Khan said, “There is a way to be good, a way to end the cycles with a little boy, an orphan, the son of Hassan somewhere in Kabul” (Hosseni 222). To this end, Amir left his p...... middle of paper ...... can change their relationship, neither ethnicity nor religion. Despite this, he contradicted himself when he was in the alley and questioned whether he should really defend Hassan since he was a Hazara. “I know,” he said, breaking our embrace. “Inshaalah, we’ll celebrate later.” Right now, I'm going to make this blue kite work for you. “Hassan still shows loyalty and devotion to Amir, but even if the reciprocity was not at the same level. Amir eventually corrected his mistakes. Friendship is like money, easier to earn than to keep. The Kite Runner is an extraordinary book that teaches several moral lessons through themes of redemption, adversity, fear, and friendship. The order of events Hosseni used was a perfect setting to show how a sinful person can become better. Life would be better if people took action to atone for their sins.
