  • Essay / Analysis of Alfred Tennyson's Three Poems - 1154

Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson of Aldworth and Freshwater is known as one of the greatest poetic figures of the Victorian era. Tennyson began writing poetry at a young age and at the age of twelve he wrote a 6,000-line poem. His poems were composed of medieval legends, myths, daily life and nature. When he was named Laureate, a position he held for 42 years, the longest of all Laureates, he wrote about historical events and one of his famous works was the Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington. Three of his poems that I chose that stood out among all the others were Mariana, In Memoriam AHH, and Ulysses. Mariana was widely acclaimed by Tennyson in which he creates images from the environment to express the emotional state of a woman. In Memoriam AHH describes Tennyson's memories of the times he shared with Arthur to whom it is dedicated and focuses on the period of depression experienced by the Victorians. And Ulysses follows Tennyson's In Memoriam AHH, which finally moves on from the grief he experienced after losing Arthur. George Tennyson was disinherited after some disagreements between him and his father and was removed as heir to the Tennyson estate and given no choice but to join the ministry. Having been left out of the will, the twelve children had to deal with their drunken, drug-addicted father. Although the family did not inherit any pro...... middle of paper ...... her lover would come to her but when the sun has set and the day is over she surrenders realizes that he will not come and she must endure the pain of being alone. The poem gives the feeling that she cannot escape the emotional trauma she is going through and the environment around her also creates a dark mood. However, giving the poplar a silvery green color gives hope that everything may not end in tragedy but there is always hope. Mariana going through a depression and feeling tired of life foreshadowed that Tennyson was going through a depression and also had a breakdown. Plus how she waited for her lover to come and she was unhappy because of that. A similar thing happened with Tennyson when his friend Arthur Hallam later died, which affected much of Tennyson's work and led him to write about nothing other than sorrow and pain and misery..
