Essay / She's Out of My League - 768
I have to agree with the consensus on this topic. She's Out of My League is such a disappointment. The movie is a romantic comedy in the vein of the R-rated adult comedy trend. I really wanted to like this movie. I mean, what's not to love? First we have the idiotic main character Kirk played by Jay Baruchel. Kirk is the kind of guy who had good intentions in life but never really had the cards in his favor. He works for the TSA with a shitty supervisor, has a junk car, and a dysfunctional family. Kirk's family truly becomes the defining element of his life in the film. The saddest thing about all of this is that his ex-girlfriend from two years ago was essentially adopted by his family, which makes for the most awkward opening to a movie I've seen since a long time. The next major element of the film is Kirk and his friends at the airport. There is the best friend with horrible advice who is Kirk's main source of advice who calls himself "Stainer" played by TJ Miller. You'll probably recognize him as Hud from Cloverfield. Then there's the band's pretty boy Jack played by Mike Vogel also from Cloverfield. Finally, there's the only groom in the group who gives sensible advice, albeit sprinkled with hilarious and creepy Disney references played by Nate Torrence. The final aspect of the film is of course Kirk's relationship with Molly played by Alice Eve. Kirk meets Alice by chance at the airport and, although a series of events brings them closer and closer, they eventually fall in love. Alice in the film is seen as a cold ten-year-old who is perfect with her knowledge of sports, politeness, and exceptional interactions with Kirk's family. Enough with the synopsis, let's see what works and flounders...... middle of paper. .....her ugly side by telling Kirk how she really feels inside. She never really recovers to become a positive character. Final Thoughts... She's Out of My League was ultimately a fluke film. What was even more depressing was that this movie had such a great premise. Who in their life has not seen the couple where you wonder if the man pays the girl for his company. Eventually we have a film to attack this premise, but it never really capitalizes on the idea and flounders in character development. Aspects that I found realistic and humorous, like Alice's ex, were underdeveloped. The film has some funny scenes interspersed with some genuinely heartwarming parts, but it's never able to kick off with good feelings. Go see this film but there is no rush. A good film to watch with nothing better to do. 3 out of 5 on the spiciness scale.
