Essay / European imperialism in Africa - 1456
ImperialismAt the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, Europe was expanding its borders. In an effort to develop their economy and culture, European superpowers began to seek new territories. Africa was an easy target; it was not politically safe and it was not modernized. Additionally, it had reliable soil that would allow Europe to produce cash crops. European nations began to flock to Africa, called the Scramble for Africa. Soon, Europe took over Africa, seizing raw materials and destroying African culture. Imperialism is responsible for the exploitation of people and materials, the destruction of traditional culture and the artificial sharing of land, which causes many long-term problems. There is no doubt that imperialism has had a negative impact on the world. European superpowers exploited Africans and their raw materials. In the 19th century, Europe began to industrialize. The new European industry is demanding in terms of raw materials. Africa is relatively close and had the resources it needed. In 1882, "the British then took control of the government as a whole and forcibly reshaped the Egyptian economy, moving from a system based on multiple cultures that maintained the country's self-sufficiency to one emphasizing production of a small number of crops. ยป Britain's invasion of Egypt is the perfect example of the exploitation of raw materials. Before the takeover, the Egyptians had crops that would allow them to remain self-sufficient. By the time the British forcibly changed the economy and agriculture, the Egyptians were no longer self-sufficient. The British only wanted the land and had already established agricultural infrastructure to grow cash crops for Europe. Cash crop production focused mainly on "cotton, raw silk, wheat...... middle of paper......Africans for taxes, making them work on the projects of the colonies and that reduced the self-sufficiency of families. In addition, the artificial division of land caused many problems. Tribes and different ethnic groups had lived apart for hundreds of years. When the colonies arrived, they imposed new laws that forced different tribes to live near each other; war was inevitable. Colonies that forced different tribes and ethnicities to live together would cost Africans an estimated 800,000 lives in Rwanda alone. Overall, European imperialism has brought no benefit to the exploited country. In conclusion, European imperialism in Africa has caused a lot of problems and overall had a negative impact on African culture. There is no doubt that any form of imperialism was good, because it always boiled down to the exploitation of one country by the other..
