Essay / Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck - 1180
The day was dark and dreary. There were two men talking peacefully by the river. The birds flew above the sky, uttering a cry of sadness. The little man told the story of a beautiful dream. The dream consisted of a dream they would one day have: rabbits and a farm and “living” off the fatta of the land. The tall man smiled and looked at the mountains as he listened and dreamed of this fantasy. He knew it would come true one day. Then, all of a sudden, the little man pulls out a gun and shoots his best friend in the back of the head. What type of violence do schools want to teach their students? By simply showing the simple act of shooting a person, it also broadcasts the idea of doing the same action. After this horrible incident, the men took the little man out for beer. Therefore, Of Mice and Men should be banned. Part of this book dedicates a chapter to showing the stereotypical situation of the 1930s. Crooks is the main part of this chapter of the book and it shows how he reacts when a white man enters the room and in other situations. This book may show some stereotypical situations in the South for educational purposes, but it may expose and offend a certain group of people. Additionally, when they read this book, they may not be able to know how to react to this book and throw discriminating names at their peers. School districts need to realize that some, if not most, students reading this will have their ethnicity offended in some way. Another part of the book presents the theme of friendship as a very positive idea. This includes George and Lennie, who are best friends and come to work on the ranch together. However, it doesn't end as well when George ends up shooting and killing Lennie. Although this book contains optimistic values of friendship, it also ends up being destructive and can give abnormal ideas to unexposed teenagers. These ideas can sometimes be harmful, especially when they come from a novel. The debasement of women sets the tone for inequalities..
