  • Essay / Peace in the Roman Empire - 1486

Peace is a luxury that has been sought throughout history. Although periods of peace have been relatively short, they have rarely lasted for long periods. One of these rare cases occurred in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. This period is called Pax Romana and was considered a time of peace, calm and stability in the Roman Empire. In Latin, Pax Romana means “Roman peace”. The emperor during the Pax Romana was Emperor Augustus. Since his reign was characterized by this period of peace, the Pax Romana is also called Pax Augustus, meaning the Peace of Augustus. Before the Pax Romana, Julius Caesar, Augustus' maternal great-uncle, ruled. He was known for his military efforts and the expansion of the Roman Empire. This military mindset persisted for years, but it was due to a collapse, which occurred when Augustus became emperor. This transition from military expeditions to relative peace and stability was described in Virgil's Aeneid, which is a translation of the Aeneid. written by Virgil. Virgil grew up during Rome's transition from the reign of Julius Caesar to the Peace of Augustus. Virgil's Aeneid describes Aeneas, a legendary Trojan soldier, and his many journeys through military life. Through Aeneas' many expeditions and experiences, The Aeneid discusses the qualities that were developed and necessary for the Pax Romana. Many of these qualities are prominent in today's society, proving their importance. One of these qualities is the importance of altruism, the idea behind sacrificing oneself to help the community. This theme is recurring in the Aeneid. We see this when seven ships full of soldiers have not eaten and are starving. Instead of just looking through the middle of a paper...the ideas, characteristics and qualities discussed and described in the Aeneid are important features of today's society. The fact that these different qualities of Pax Romana end up becoming part of a distant society shows their importance to a stable and advanced society. These qualities are what make us all Romans. We are selfless, forgive, obey and make laws, are rational, etc., which allows us to maintain order in our days. The ideas discussed in the Aeneid also show the similarities in society then and now. The reign of Augustus brought a period of peace and stability for the Roman Empire after years of war, and this was mainly due to the people's willingness to change their old traditions and adopt new ideologies. Rome, during the Pax Romana, set a model for advanced civilizations and cultures to follow, and their infrastructure survives to this day..
