Essay / Walrus Essay - 811
The walrus, also known as the saber-toothed seal, is a large finned mammal. Walrus means gregarious marine animal and is related to eared seals because both animals have two large, downward-pointing tusks. The scientific name of the walrus is Odobenus rosmarus. The walrus also has a mustache. Walruses live in the Arctic. Walrus tusks are very useful. They can pull large animal bodies out of the water (e.g. by walking with their teeth) and they also use their tusks to break holes in the ice. Walrus tusks can reach up to 3 feet for both males and females (National Geographic). The walrus population numbers 250,000 animals. There are 200,000 walruses in the Pacific; however, the walrus population is decreasing due to hunters (Defenders). Walruses change color from pink to a lighter cinnamon brown then to a lighter shade when they enter colder water. When the walrus becomes hot, blood pumps through its fat and skin and is cooled by air or water. When they are cold, they can reduce blood flow to the skin and fat to conserve heat. Walruses are able to adjust the ambient temperature thanks to their circular bool system (Library Thinkquest). Newborns have a thin layer of blubber and are covered in a layer of short gray hair, which is convenient since they are born on the ice floe. Walruses don't see very well, but their hearing and sense of smell are very good. Walruses' touch is very important because walruses are very social (environmental giraffe). The two different types of walruses are the Atlantic walrus and the Pacific walrus. The Atlantic walrus inhabits coastal areas of northeastern Canada and the Pacific walrus inhabits the northern seas off Russia and Alaska. The Atlantic walrus is larger than the Pacific walrus (National Geographic). The walrus has tusks in the middle of a paper... the polar bear. The polar bear kills the walrus when it is on land, just as the orca kills it when it swims in water (wheat). Humans use Morse code for many things. First, humans eat this animal. Second, they use this animal to light oil lamps. Third, its skin is durable, so it covers large boats, and its tusks make spear or spear points or are carved into a wide variety of useful and ornamental objects (Library Thinkquest). Only Native Americans can hunt walruses, because the survival of the species was threatened in the past by excessive hunting. Their tusks, oil and meat were so sought after in the 18th and 19th centuries that the walrus was hunted to extinction in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and around Sable Island, off the coast of the Nova Scotia. Walruses are very interesting animals and deserve much more attention. They are really nice animals. (National Geographic).
