Essay / Bring Instant Replay to Major League Baseball - 1000
Major League Baseball (MLB) has been losing fans for several years. The average attendance for an MLB game has been declining for several years. If Major League Baseball wants to compete with the popularity of professional sports such as professional football (NFL) and professional basketball (NBA), it must adopt some of the technologies that have made these sports successful in recent years. Currently, MLB has a replay system used to determine whether home runs are fair or foul, whether the ball actually left the field of play, or whether the ball was interfered with by a spectator. MLB should have an instant replay system that can be used for all judgments except ball and strike calls. MLB could adopt a policy similar to that of the NFL, whereby the head coach is given a number of challenges that he can use to begin the instant replay process, i.e. limiting the coaches with two or three challenges per match. MLB could also consider adding an additional umpire to help with the replay system and reduce the time spent on challenges. The challenge of implementing an instant replay system in MLB can potentially impact the speed of the game. This has been one of the main arguments against replay in MLB by baseball purists. Purists seem to like humans and the errors that come with humans' judgment that impact gameplay. Purists don't seem to want to embrace emerging proofreading technologies in an effort to arrive at a correct answer, as proofreading would interfere with the human element that purists embrace. “The lack of instant replay in baseball is one of those crises, and to curl up in a ball and pretend that a problem in 2011 doesn't exist because it didn't exist in 1911 is f... . middle of paper ...... services (June 3, 2010).
